Portrait of Cosette from Les Misérables

This is my mixed media illustration of Cosette from Victor Hugo’s classic, Les Misérables. It is one of my favorite books (and also my favorite musical). This piece shows her when she lived with Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, who treat her like a servant. Luckily, her fortune soon changes as she is taken in by the kind Jean Valjean.

This is how Hugo describes young Cosette, “In the place she is called The Lark. People like figurative names and were pleased thus to name this little being, not larger than a bird, trembling, frightened, and shivering, awake every morning first of all in the house and the village. Only the poor lark never sang.”

This work is available at as an art print, framed art print, print on canvas, card, iphone case, ipad/laptop skin, tote bag and shirt at http://society6.com/ElephantTrunkStudio/Portrait-of-Cosette-from-Les-Misrables_Print

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Here’s a little Valentine’s Day inspiration from Elephant Trunk Studio!

“and they lived happily ever after” art print by Elephant Trunk Studio

This work is a mixed media digital piece comprised of 2 different magazine collages and digitally illustrated characters in a boat. I love the dreamy enviroment of the collage textures and the tenderness of the illustrated couple. I tried to make a timeless moment that anyone who experienced love can relate to.

“You are my home” art print by Elephant Trunk Studio

This piece is very personal to me. In the past eleven years, my husband and I have lived in three different states and five different houses. Our family has grown during our journey and we now have two beautiful girls. Although we have not been able to set down permanent “roots” in any one location yet, we still maintain our love and sense of home. My husband and my girls are my home and where my heart lives.

Cupid and Psyche by Elephant Trunk Studio This is one of my oldest works of art. I created it when I was in a lithography class in college. It is based on the gorgeous sculpture by Neoclassical artist, Antonio Canova in the late 18th Century. I loved how beautifully Canova captured the moment of passion when Cupid woke the lifeless Psyche with a kiss. The story of Cupid and Psyche can be read here:

The original lithograph I created was in black and white, and I have since digitally edited it to be in rich tones of purple.

All of the artwork can be purchased on many types of products in my Society6 store: www.society6.com/elephanttrunkstudio

Inspired by Music: Into the Mystic

It’s been a long time since I posted new artwork to my store on Society6 so I used the tried and true method of getting inspired, music. I created a digital collage with typography that was inspired by the lyrics of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” from his 1970’s album entitled Moondance. Into the Mystic is so beautiful, simple and timeless. I suggest buying a copy from itunes if you haven’t already or buy the whole album (with happens to have another one of my all-time favorite songs, “Crazy Love”).

The image elements in my digital collage are a combination of my photographs, digital painting done in Photoshop, and textures that I have created. The typography is done in a font called “Hannah’s Messy Handwriting” by Hannah Marlin on http://www.dafont.com.

This image is available as art prints, canvas prints, iphone cases, laptop skins, t-shirts, hoodies, cards, pillows, and tote bags at www.society6.com/elephanttrunkstudio.

Chevrons: I gave in to the fad and I don’t regret it

I’ve resisted designing a chevron piece for a really long time. I’ve joked about it and viewed it as the new trendy design element seen all over sites like Pinterest and Wanelo (like the “put a bird on it”  and “keep calm and carry on” crazes). Secretly, I love chevrons and finally caved to their angled ways. Chevrons are so versatile and so fun! They look great as solids or patterned, they can be girly or masculine and they can be casual or sophisticated. I ended up designing a casual and femine chevron pattern that reminded me of a vintage quilt.

I created a simple chevron template in Photoshop and combined several patterned elements that I commonly use in my digital collages. I wanted to use a girly color palette of pinks, blues and greens to soften up the angular shapes of the pattern. You can find products with this pattern at http://society6.com/ElephantTrunkStudio/Herringbone-Pattern_Print. I hope to add many various products with this pattern to my Zazzle shop, so stay tuned.

For the Love of Crayons

This gallery contains 8 photos.

A fellow artist and friend, Catherine Holcombe, was recently told that crayons are not an appropriate art medium for adults. This inspired the community of Society6 artists to take on the challenge of making artwork using crayons and the “Crayon Bomb … Continue reading
